5 Excuses People Make to NOT start pole dancing classes
Hey y'all! I'm Gabby, I'm a deskie at the Reservoir and Moonee Ponds studios and a lifetime poler (13 years and counting) and I'm here to tell you that all those excuses you've created in your head for why you can't start pole dancing classes are just that EXCUSES! Get out of your comfort zone and do something for yourself, something that scares and challenges you.
- “Ohhhh, but I’m not fit enough to do that!”
This is one of the biggest excuses people say about pole fitness. One of the main reasons people join our studios is to get fit, they want to exercise but want to have fun at the same time. We don’t expect anyone to have any dance or fitness experience when they sign up, pole beginner classes are structured to accommodate students with zero levels of fitness. Like joining a gym, you are there to live a healthier lifestyle and increase your fitness.
- Fearing that you are too far out of your comfort zone!
I once read a quote on Instagram that really changed my perspective on being outside of my own comfort zone, and that was, “You never change your life until you step out of your comfort zone; change begins at the end of your comfort zone - Roy T. Bennett”. If you know you need to make a change in your life, because you’re feeling unhappy, then the only way to change this is outside of your comfort zone. It’s that simple! Whether you need to chat to someone about a “sticky” situation or start pole dancing classes, all by yourself, then these experiences will help you grow and get you out of your ‘unhappy funk’. Scary but true! #youcandoit
- “I don’t have the time or have that kind of money!”
We know that money is the first deciding factor for any new student who walks through the door of our pole studios, that's why we have an introductory offer, 10 classes for $99. If you really want to make a change in your life, because you are determined to get out of your “funk”, then you will MAKE the time and spend the money on an activity that you’re enjoying and getting results from, mentally and physically. Start with that introductory offer, you never know until you give it go, and then decide if pole dancing is the right hobby for you, what's the worst thing that could happen?
- “I’m too scared the other women in the pole class are going to laugh and look at me”
This is still a thought in people’s minds, even those that are at our highest levels of pole dancing. Yes, surprising! When you’re in class, the ‘struggle is real’ to not compare yourself to the person next to you. But remember that people are far more focused on themselves than you, they are on their own journey. You are your own worst critic, and more often than not the women next to you will encourage and support you to do your best. Everyone is in the same boat, they are nervous but they are giving it a red hot go, so there is nothing to be embarrassed or shy about!
- “I’m too old to start pole classes”
Straight up, isn’t age just a number? You are as old as you feel. This is a true statement! You are never too old to start any kind of hobby, including beginner pole classes. Yes, they are quite challenging, but you must listen to your body and go at your own pace. The turtle wins the race, right? There’s no hurry, take the time to grow and learn in pole class, you will be surprised at what your body is capable of doing. Believe it or not, there are pole dance competitions that have a Masters category and some of the best Australian pole dancers are 50+, and some of the students that attend our classes are 60+ If not now, when?
So, you heard it here first, you have no excuse to start! Turn those excuses into “why nots”, write a list of pros and cons, and really evaluate what’s holding you back. I personally believe in the Gen-Y term of “YOLO – you only live once”, I have it tattooed on my ribs I believe in it so much, because it’s true. We are not on this earth forever, so step outside of your comfort zone to try something new, for yourself! Your own happiness should be your priority, before anything else! See you in the studio ladies xx
